Voice Lessons!

April 11, 2019

Exercising the voice is very similar to exercising any other muscle in the body. It requires proper attention and care, healthy and sustainable practices, and a large dose of perseverance and discipline. If you set a goal to lose weight, you can’t realistically expect to lose 10 lbs. in your first few days of exercising, so how can you expect simply one hour of vocal training to do the same? Realistically, it takes lots of little moments of consistent and intentional practice, and lots of room and grace for mistakes.

Because the voice is such a delicate and vulnerable instrument, I like for my students to understand that the reward does not come swiftly or without effort, no matter how talented or skilled you are naturally. Voice training is sort of like mind control; we spend our whole lives learning to breathe without thinking much about it, and vocal training challenges us to reverse that and actually control our breath in subtle and nuanced ways. It takes time, practice, and a flexible, open mind to understand all of the mechanics that go into a beautifully and artfully sung song.
